Gorton Monastery

Charcoal drawing of 19th-century former Franciscan friary in Gorton, Manchester as seen from a train window. The Church and Friary Of St Francis is known locally as Gorton Monastery. It is an imposing gothic monument, and in stark contrast to the buildings surrounding it. It is a familiar view to those travelling into Manchester by train from the Sheffield direction. The track passes the monastery and shortly afterwards a shipping container storage yard. In this piece the two elements are combined into one composition. An alternative title for this drawing is ‘Two gods’, with the shipping containers representing another type of worship.
