Steps To Whitby Abbey

An iconic view of Whitby, North Yorkshire from the stone steps to Whitby Abbey. The 199 stone steps lead to the ruins of the medieval Abbey and St Mary’s Church on the East Cliff. Looking down on the rooftops of the old town and The Board Inn, and across the mouth of the River Esk to Whitby Fish Market, harbour and beach. On the opposite headland of West Cliff the Whalebone archway is silhouetted against the sky, next to the statue of Captain James Cook.

Also known as ‘The Church Stairs’ and ‘Jacob’s Ladder’, the well trodden steps are a Grade I listed structure, and were a measure of the determination of pilgrims up to the Abbey. Now serving as a challenge to tourists and Goths from far and wide! This piece was drawn after a recent trip to the Yorkshire town. I went sketching in the quiet of the early morning. There was just me and a gentleman cleaning the streets, (who I have included in the picture.) We both agreed, this is the best time of day.
